Game Recap: 2/19 vs. Notre Dame

January 29, 2005.

George Bush was president, Mariah Carey's "Don't Forget About Us" was the #1 song, i it was the last time the Falcon's had beaten the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in regulation. That streak came to an exciting end tonight at the BGSU Ice Arena when BG came back from a 2 goal defecit in the 3rd period to win 4-3.

The scoring started over way though the 1st Period as Notre Dame's Kyle Palmieri scored a power play goal off the Andrew Krelove penalty at 11:47. The score stayed at 1-0 Notre Dame to end the first.

The second period seemed to start well for the Falcons as they got a power play opportunity at 6:49. But a defensmen turnover lead to a breakaway goal scored by Irish captain Ryan Thang. In what would become a recurring theme the Falcons responded 26 seconds later while still on the powerplay when Kai Kantola trickled in the puck. After 2 periods it was 2-1 Irish.

The third period scoring started at 4:59 when the Irish's Joe Lavin scored a 5-on-5 marker. Not to be outdone the Falcons responded 41 seconds later when the on-fire fourth line put in the first of their 2 goals when Wade Finegan buried the puck. The fourth line got another goal 9:33 of the stick of Brennan Vargas. The BG game winner came off a coast-to-coast effort that was set up by a save by Nick Eno. Eno kicked the puck to Senior Captain Kyle Page who skated the puck to center ice. He fed a pass to Freshman Nathan Pageau who buried a wrist shot behind goalie Mike Johnson.

What was most positive for the Falcon's win was the way some of the underclassment like the fourth line played. They scored goals that would make grittiest of coaches happy. They weren't pretty but they were the result of hard work coming off good board play, cycling passed, and crashing the net. What was also was a positive was that the Senior class got the monkey off their backs. This Senior class had never beaten Notre Dame in regulation. Some classes in the past haven't carried the best leadership but the class of 2010 has shown to be some of the best leaders both on and off the ice.
